Jamal Thompson

Jamal Thompson was a Caribbean American civil rights attorney born in late 2002 and raised in West Baltimore, Maryland. He was the only child of Marva Thompson, a Jamaican-born nurse, and Jean-Claude Thompson, a Haitian-born warehouse worker. Jamal belonged to The Survivors, the childhood friend group whose attempt to help Marcus Henderson during a June 2019 mental health crisis ended in police violence.

Early Life and Background

Jamal grew up in a household shaped by his parents’ Jamaican and Haitian backgrounds. He spoke English, Jamaican Patois, Haitian Creole, and French. His closest childhood friends were Marcus, Kevin Williams, Darnell Taylor, and Tre Martin, whom he knew through the West Baltimore Recreation Center.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake killed members of Jean-Claude’s family. Jamal was seven and witnessed the effect of the deaths and the prolonged effort to contact and support surviving relatives. When he was approximately nine or ten, Marva’s mother became ill and died around 2012.

Personality

Jamal was quiet, observant, and analytical. He usually listened before speaking and addressed problems by identifying the policy, rule, or institutional practice involved. Within his childhood friend group, this often meant explaining Marcus’s access needs to adults and arguing for practical accommodations.

Cultural Identity and Heritage

Jamal was the American-born son of a Jamaican mother and a Haitian father. English, Jamaican Patois, Haitian Creole, and French were used within the Thompson household. His speech shifted toward the Caribbean patterns he had learned at home when he was exhausted or emotionally overwhelmed.

Speech and Communication Patterns

Jamal spoke carefully and economically in academic and professional settings. His communication became more direct when he challenged mistreatment or advocated for someone else. He did not use the same register in every context; Caribbean vocabulary and pronunciation became more pronounced at home and during periods of fatigue or distress.

Jamal graduated from high school in 2021 with an associate degree earned through dual enrollment. He entered Georgetown University that fall with junior standing and completed his bachelor’s degree in 2023. He began the J.D. program at Georgetown University Law Center in fall 2023, was in his third year of law school in January 2026, and graduated in spring 2026.

After graduating, Jamal pursued civil rights law in Baltimore. His work focused on police misconduct, mental-health crisis response, constitutional protections, and broader institutional reform.

Health and Disabilities

Jamal had chronic migraines that predated the June 2019 incident and became more frequent or severe afterward. Stress and sleep loss worsened them, and Marva often noticed early signs during the hair-braiding sessions they shared.

Jamal also developed post-traumatic stress disorder after the 2019 police violence. Documented effects included insomnia, hypervigilance, and difficulty discussing his distress directly.

Jamal and his friends repeatedly challenged the recreation center’s exclusion of Marcus from activities. Jamal proposed providing cartoons and other activities that Marcus could use while resting. After volunteer Shanice assaulted Marcus by shaking him, Jamal joined the other boys in confronting her and reassuring Marcus that his fatigue did not justify the abuse.

June 2019 Police Violence

On June 15, 2019, Jamal and the other Survivors tried to help Marcus during a mental health crisis. Jamal witnessed an officer fire a warning shot and point a gun at Kevin before Nathan Weston de-escalated the crisis. The incident was recorded and circulated publicly; Jamal developed lasting trauma symptoms afterward.

After Tre was critically injured at Camp Pendleton in November 2026, Jamal, then a recent Georgetown Law graduate, traveled to California with Kevin, Darnell, and Marcus. Their response continued the group’s established pattern of gathering around one another during crises.

Marva monitored Jamal’s migraines, sleep, and eating, particularly during the hair-braiding sessions they shared. Those sessions also gave Jamal a familiar setting in which he could rest after the 2019 incident.

Jean-Claude Thompson

Jean-Claude and Jamal were affected by different public crises: the 2010 earthquake and the 2019 police violence. During Jamal’s recovery after the 2019 incident, Jean-Claude emphasized that surviving and returning home did not constitute a failure.

Friendships and Social Connections

Jamal remained close to Marcus, Kevin, Darnell, and Tre into adulthood. Their work and education took them into different fields, but the group continued to respond collectively when one of its members faced a crisis.
